Luis Chacón
LUIS CHACON is one of the most prominent figures in the field of national culture in the last three decades. His double role as artist and cultural promoter make him one of the most notable characters of the late 20th and early 21st centuries in the half Costa Rican
To summarize his successful career as a cultural promoter, I will tell you that we owe Luis Chacón the creation of the NATIONAL GALLERY OF CONTEMPORARY ART, GANAC, with an international art collection with more than five hundred works donated by his colleagues, the prestigious MUSEUM OF ART AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGN, the ART IN PUBLIC SPACES project of the Municipality of San José, which provides the city with an open-air museum and the creation of one of the most famous groups of Central American painters: BOCARACÁ
As an artist he has had a career always on the rise, perhaps due to his solid training, he has a doctorate in Fine Arts from the Sorbonne University, France and is a continuous researcher of art as a plastic phenomenon around the world, which makes him a constant traveler, and special guest of international artistic groups.
LUIS CHACON is the undisputed heir to the great Costa Rican landscape artists such as GALLARDO, QUIROS or PACHECO. With him the landscape acquires new dimensions, enlarges it, conceptualizes it, ironizes it, fragments it, reduces it, modifies it, appropriates it or updates it. Today he presents it to us as a social problem: climate change and global warming. And of course, full of color.
Holder of multiple distinctions, he is the NATIONAL PAINTING AWARD in 1989 and 1992. Winner of the single prize of the LACHNER and SAENZ Biennial in 1986 and the ANCORA awards in 1982 and 1992. He has represented the country in outstanding international competitions such as the SAO PAULO BIENNIAL IN 1995, the BIENNIAL of CUBA 1986, BIENNIAL of CUENCA 1995, BIENNIAL of VALPARAISO in 1988, the BIENNIAL PEDRO DOMEC of 1993 in MEXICO, CURRENT ART OF IBEROAMERICA in the PLAZA COLON, MADRID in 1980 and exhibited in numerous museums and galleries such as the MUSEO OF THE AMERICAS in WASHINGTON DC in 1983. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL 1996. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF PRINTS, MEXICO CITY in 1992. MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART, SEUL KOREA in 2006 or in national museums on multiple occasions. His works are in important collections such as LA MAISON DE L UNESCO and LA MAISON DE L AMERIQUE LATINE in Paris, the JAPANESE ARTISTS SOCIETY in TOKYO, the NATIONAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS and the TAI WAN MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART, the MUSEUM OF LAS AMERICAS in WASHINGTON, the MUSEO NACIONAL DEL LA ESTAMPA MEXICO, the MEMORIAL DE LA AMERICA LATINA in SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, the AIDEE SANTAMARIA MUSEUM in CUBA, the MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART OF BARBADOS and in COSTA RICA: the NATIONAL MUSEUM, the MUSEUM OF COSTA RICAN ART, THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART AND DESIGN, THE NATIONAL ARCHIVE, THE NATIONAL LIBRARY, THE PRESIDENTIAL HOUSE, the INSTITUTE OF INSURANCE, the COSTA RICAN SOCIAL SECURITY FUND, the CENTRAL BANK MUSEUMS, the OMBUDSMAN'S OFFICE and the NATIONAL CENTER OF SCIENCE AND CULTURE, among others.
LUIS CHACON will always be the tireless manager of new cultural projects and the passionate researcher of the artistic phenomenon; His favorite phrase is: "I make art, not decorations" which indicates the degree of communion with his profession.
